Prelude and Fugue in A flat major

Prelude and Fugue in A flat major - (2010)

for organ

The rhythmic motive and motor of the prelude is the hemiola, as the triple feeling of the first beat alternates with the duple of the second beat. The harmonic palette is of the whole tone series, in parallel triadic harmony thereby creating light polytonal dissonance between their movement and the long pedal notes.

The prelude gives way to a florid pedal line with the first true instance of the fugue subject appearing at measure 46. The fugue is therefore accompanied throughout, with the final statement in the pedal.
