Il mare canta - (2025)
Gabriele D’Annunzio
for medium high voice and piano
a Cinzia Zahner
Il mare canta una canzon d’amore
ne ’l plenilunio bianco a la pineta:
filtra giù per le cupole il chiarore
animando la vasta ombra segreta,
e giunge su ’l grecal fresco l’odore
de l’alghe da gli scogli d’Impruneta
mentre stanco intristiscemi ne ’l core
un desiderio folle di poeta…
Ma più giocondi il gran mare d’argento
leva gl’inni d’amor; ma via tra i pini
un dolce nome gli risponde il vento;
ma dileguando pe’ diamantini
spazi un fantasma a vol tacito e lento
mi sorride da i grandi occhi divini.

Gabriele D'Annunzio (1863 - 1938)
The sea sings a love song
in the white full moon to the pine forest:
filters down through the domes, the glow
animating the vast secret shadow,
and the fresh smell reaches the north-east wind
Of seaweed from the rocks of Impruneta
while tired you sadden my heart
A poet's mad desire
But more joyful the great silver sea
Raises the hymns of love; But away among the pines
a sweet name the wind answers him;
But vanishing for diamonds
spaces a ghost at vol tacit and slow
smiles at me from great divine eyes.

In Versi d'amore (1882).
